Last week of remote Learning!!
Happy Last Week Friends!
Summer vacation is almost here!! This week my assignment for you will be very easy and super fun! All you have to do is to make a reading plan with your family! I would like for you to take a few minutes to talk with your family and answer the following questions below. You can simply discuss the questions, or you can write your answers and send them to me. I know this will be a busy week in your classrooms, so just do the best you can. I am including a ton of reading resources for you and your family to use all throughout the summer. Note that many of these websites were made or changed during remote learning and they will likely change again. They might have been free, but now they will ask you to pay a subscription fee. For this reason I am including enough resources so that you will be able to find something that works for you.
Please know that I will miss you very much this summer! Be safe and enjoy the summer sunshine! I hope you will all take the summer reading challenge and I hope you enjoy the video! https://youtu.be/DYIVF3VOGDY
Family discussion questions:
What will your summer reading plan be?
Will you read every day, every other day, or once per week?
Do you have a time of the day that you and your family can set aside for everyone to read together?
Do you have enough books or online stories picked out to help you reach your reading goals?
In addition to books that you can read alone, have you picked out a book that someone else can read to you?
Now go back to the tabs at the top and select Summer Reading Resources. You can visit this page all summer long for great reading resources.
Have a great summer!
Love,
Mrs. S.

Create a space in you house for some comfy reading. Place your favorite books in the space and some comfortable seating. Don't forget to bring some stuffed animals into your space. Read in your comfy spot for at least 20 minutes each day!
We have such fun using fun things like snapdoodles, magnets, and legos to build things that are in our imagination. You can do this at home too! Try building or creating something using your own materials at home! You can draw or take a photo of it and send it to me, I would just love to see it!

Hello Everyone! Welcome to another week of online learning!
I miss you all so very much! You did a great job last week! Were you able to guess my favorite kind of pie? If you know me, I almost always am eating chocolate. YES! IT”S CHOCOLATE PIE!! You Guessed it!
This week I have another great story for you, just click on the link and listen to the story, Carla’s Sandwich, written by Debbie Herman and illustrated by Sheila Bailey. I fell in love with this story because as you know, I LOVE making creative and sometimes WEIRD sandwiches! I also like how the characters change at the end of the story. Next time I’ll tell you my favorite kind of sandwich to make, but beware it might gross you out!

Now that you’ve heard the story, I’m wondering if you can make a wonderful and creative sandwich. There are many ways to do this! You can make your sandwich out of paper, play-dough, or felt! But to have some real fun, try making a real sandwich, one that no one would expect! Now see if you can get someone in your family to taste it. PLEASE! If they do, make sure to get a picture of them tasting your wildly creative sandwich!! Make sure to send me the picture of your creation, or a short video to [email protected]
Here are some pictures to start your thinking!

Another choice:
Below is a recipe template. Use this form to write or tell someone how you made the sandwich!
Maybe you could find more recipes to try and collect them on recipe cards like this one. Then try to cook them with your family’s help! Oh, and please do me a favor and add an "I" in the word ingredients! I borrowed this form and the "I" is missing. Uh,oh!

Hello Friends,
Happy Spring! I thought you might enjoy listening to The Tale of Peter Rabbit!
Just a few tips as you continue your library lessons:
*Make sure you have done one activity from each week. I will put new lessons up each week but be sure you've done one from each and if you are a week behind that is ok because we are on a six day rotation.
*You are only expected to do one activity. There are lots to choose from and you can even go back and pick one from a previous week.
*The important thing is that you are reading!!
* I always love to see or hear how you are doing. Please email me pictures or photos of what you have done if you want to! I love getting these!
*Always check the resources tab above for fun links to explore!

Here are some other things to choose from this week:
* Choose another story from Storyline Online. The link is in the resource tab.
*ABC order game -- Look around the house. How many different objects can you find that begin with a different letter of the alphabet? Now put the objects in ABC order.-- To make this game more challenging, find 2 or more objects that begin with each letter and put them all in ABC order.
This is an important skill to have when you are searching for books in the Library!

Stellaluna
|
This is one of my FAVORITE stories! It has some wonderful characters, especially Stellaluna and her little birdie friends. After listening to the story, you may choose one of the activities below. Feel free to choose more than one if you like! I hope you are reading books every single day!
Happy Reading,
Mrs. Scanlan
Name That Character -- Make a list of 2 book characters. For each character, write 3-4 clues that would describe the character. For example: I am big. I belong to Emily Elizabeth. I am red. (Clifford the Big Red Dog). The first clue should be more general, and the last clue should be more specific to describe the character. Play with your family and see who can name the character you describe.
***A variation of this game is to think of a book character, such as Clifford the Big Red Dog, and the next person has to think of a book character that begins with the last letter of the previous character. Dog ended with g, so the next character must begin with G (Goldilocks). How many characters can you name?
*** An easier version would just be How Many Book Characters Can You Name?
Picture Puzzle -- find a picture of a book character. You can draw it, find it online and print it out, or use a picture from a book you don’t read anymore. The picture should be the size of a regular piece of paper. Glue the picture on a sturdy piece of cardboard. Cut it apart into pieces like a jigsaw puzzle (ask for an adults help if needed). Have fun putting the pieces together again.
Create a Poem -- April is National Poetry Month. Find an old newspaper or magazine. Cut out all kinds of words, the more the better. Create a poem using some of the words you cut out. Save the words you didn’t use for later. See how many poems you can come up with. Remember, poems don’t have to rhyme and can be as long or short as you imagine. They express your feelings or what you see, hear, or smell around you.
Make up a Joke -- April is National Humor Month. Can you make up a joke or riddle? It can be a knock knock joke, a riddle they have to guess the answer to, or just something funny to make someone laugh!
Retell a Folktale or Fairy tale -- Anyone can retell a folktale or fairy tale. Think of your favorite, like The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella or Snow White. Change one or two parts of the story, such as the setting or the characters (maybe even add a new character to the story), or flip the story around to make the good guy be the bad guy. For example, what if the Three Little Pigs took place on Mars? What if instead of goats, there were Three Tom Cats in the city? What if the wolf was really trying to help Little Red Riding Hood instead of wanting to eat her? Use your wildest imagination! Once you’ve written your new tale, draw some pictures to go with it.

Hello Wonderful Kiddos! Mrs. Scanlan misses you very much!
This week we will be thinking about important characters in stories. Did you ever wonder how the author of the story comes up with these wonderful characters? Listen to the story called The Bear Ate Your Sandwich. In the next video the author will tell you all about how she created her character, the bear! There are some more videos of authors talking about how they came up with their characters.
This week you can create your own character and write some words that describe your new character. You can work on this during your library time and your computer time! I thought it might be fun to have you type the words on a word document or on a google document. You can also use paper and pencil if you wish. Below is a copy of mine.
I will also post it on the computer special page. Have fun and be sure to email me if you have any problems!
